You really just have to know about: four-, five-, and six-digit references to get started. Roughly this is how the reference numbers play out by year: Four-digit Rolex – 1950s to 1980. Five-digit Rolex – 1980 – 2000s. Six-digit Rolex – 2000s-preseant.
Many Rolex watches from the 20's and 30's had these types of markings. I've seen them with a variety of numbers from 7 to 31 with the wording "Word's Records", "World Records" and "Records Universels". What does it look like?
