I’ve heard the SBGN003 called a Rolex Explorer II homage, and, while I understand where that comparison comes from (steel 24-hour bezel and orange seconds hand), it’s kind of like calling any watch with a dive bezel a Submariner homage. I suppose there are plenty of people who do — but regardless, my suggestion would be to ignore those . Fair disclosure: I’m reviewing my personal Grand Seiko 9F GMT, reference SBGN003 and it’s the best watch I’ve ever owned. Hands down, full stop, no discussion necessary. There have been a lot of opinions that the Grand Seiko SBGN003 is too similar to that of the Rolex Explorer 16570. Your eyes don’t fool you: There are similarities but once you look beyond a glance, there are many differences. Listing a few: 1) The GS hands are dauphine, Rolex has a Mercedes hour hand with lollipop seconds hand. Grand Seiko Sport GMT SBGN003. Diameter: 39mm; Movement: Caliber 9F86 Quartz; Price: ,200; The Grand Seiko SBN003 is a sporty GMT. This reference comes in a nearly perfect 39mm diameter and 12mm thickness kept a bit thinner than usual thanks to its quartz caliber 9F86. That’s right. Quartz. As for the SBGN003, I feel that it offers a degree of clinical precision paired with the Grand Seiko quality that meshes beautifully. Knowing that you have the first ever 9F Quartz GMT ever produced by GS is a great realization whilst wearing the piece, and I love the inky blackness of the dial — it’s actually quite similar in . And finally the Rolex. I love the Rolex, both polar and black variants, but I couldn't justify the price for a vintage piece. Ones in good condition run around 5.5k to 6k, which is just too much IMO.

The two non-limited models include the black/red SBGN003 and the blue/red SBGN005, both of which are accurate to +/- 10 seconds a year. Despite the difference in accuracy for the LE, all three examples use Grand Seiko's 9F86 in-house quartz caliber.
When I bought it, my specs were clear: Sport steel watch, rugged yet classy, GMT (living in Europe I travel to Asia or the US roughly once a month) and above all, NOT a Rolex. Down the road, after months of research, I did not find a better match than the EXP II and gave up my definitive will to buy anything but a Rolex.
