I'm having a hard time finding any kind of forums for the old style pantagraph engravers. I purchased a New Hermes VBII to engrave guns with. Its alot bigger machine than I thought it was in the pictures, wow. It came with a New Hermes sharpener, 5 sets of fonts, tons of bits and and nice storage cabinet for all the accesories. All for 0 bucks.
The really nice thing that the New Hermes engravers do that a 2d machine tool type engraver doesn't do very easily is to follow a curved surface. The New Hermes engravers have a depth setting ring that goes around the cutter and you hold the cutter down against the work with one hand while guiding the stylus through the templates with other hand. A tip for New Hermes owners: For the drive belts, I've found that silicone O-rings work very well. I found some 1/8" dia (cross section) x 14" dia O-rings at the surplus store which fit. The silicone (blue) rings seem to last indefinitely. I've had one set on there for several years with no problems. Buna or Viton rings will fail quickly. Bruce .
